My dear parents, Dorothy and Jack Koffman, were married for almost 60 years. Dad was diagnosed with dementia in the 1980s and passed away in the 1990s. Mom was his primary caregiver for all but the last few months of his life. She passed away just one day short of 6 months later.
“My uncle used to say, ‘It’s hotter than hell, let’s break out the watermelon’ . . . Now, I don’t like watermelon, but pineapple is not too bad. I don’t know where they got the name pineapple. It doesn’t look like a pine or an apple.”

Francine lives in a residential care facility and was part of a small group of Special Seniors looking through the FRUITS book, page by page, with the activity coordinator. When the activity coordinator turned to the Banana page, he asked, “What do you do with this?” A moment passed and then Francine, who is usually very quiet, looked up with a twinkle in her eye and said, “Why . . . you just tear it down and eat it up!” She cracked up everyone in the group and the staff as well.
